Worth and Potential

I’ve been listening lately to Steven Covey’s The 8th Habit on Audible. It’s been a great experience.

One part of it is that “the definition of leadership is seeing people’s worth and potential so clearly that they see it in themselves.”

I’ve been trying to apply that principle at work. Many of the people I see have come to believe that they aren’t really worth much. Many have also lost sight of the potential that they have within them.

I’ve been trying to make it a point to really let people know that they matter to me and that they could be doing a lot more with their lives. It’s been a very meaningful experience for me and I believe for them as well.

Often it’s meant being very frank with people. I often see people who have stopped themselves from progressing by turning to drugs. I try to help them see that drugs were their decision and that they can do so much better than that. They’re worth much more than that.

I really believe that too. All of us have inherent worth as human beings. I personally believe that’s because we’re all children of God. We also have great potential to achieve amazing things, if we make decisions that unlock that potential.

It’s been very freeing to help people (and myself) focus on that worth and potential. It’s also been very helpful to focus on those things as a parent. Remembering to really affirm each child’s worth and potential.

Great stuff and a book I highly recommend! Check it out here.
